Video Based Courses and Blended Learning available to Agencies for Their Adopters, Foster Carers and Special Guardians

We now provide webinars and courses via the video conferencing service; Zoom.

Over the years we have used several webinar/video meeting services and Zoom stands out, as participants can see the trainer and chat whilst also viewing the presentation. We make sure that each webinar/course includes at least two breakout sessions, allowing participants to go into small groups of 4 or 5 to discuss their issues. This facility makes the course really friendly and the training experience feels very similar to a live course. Participants benefit from group work and activities together which makes the learning much more effective and enjoyable. View a sample timetable  of a one day resilience course via zoom here (link)

The trainer can visit each break-out room, send each group messages and participants can request help whilst there.  We can play videos and can view the whole class, making it easy for participants to join in and ask questions.

i/ Building Resilience to Stress

We all know that we should look after ourselves. We are fully aware of the stress response. Even so, when faced with the challenges of a troubled/traumatised child we can become amongst other things, irritable, exhausted and overwhelmed and feel inadequate, anxious and depressed. This webinar includes:

  • Managing your reactions
  • Looking after yourself
  • Reducing your stress and developing resilience
  • Modifying behaviour in yourself that drives you
  • Coping with worry and anxiety

ii/ Improving Communication with your Child

Less is more!! How often do your lectures and sermons go over your child’s head?! How can you use body language and develop rapport with your child to be more effective in your communication? How can you help your child feel heard and how can you help them express their emotions. All is revealed in this webinar.

iii/ Tackling The Turmoil Through Movement

Many children are under or over responsive/reactive to sensory input (sounds, smells, tastes, other people). They can struggle with reading and writing, concentration and behaving at school and may have issues with physical activities such as riding a bike, swimming or climbing.

Such behaviour and developmental delay have been attributed to trauma and lack of stimulation as well as living in hostile environments before and after birth. However, there is another cause to add to the mix, and one that can be easily rectified.

We are all born with primitive reflexes that are usually integrated within the first year or so of life as they no longer serve us. Think of infant reflexes such as sucking and rooting and the plantar grasp where the toes curl when the foot is stroked. Two reflexes prevalent in our children are the moro (startle) and fear paralysis reflex which if not integrated are believed to contribute to learning challenges, behavioural challenges, anxiety, emotional imbalances and overwhelm. We will look at:

  • The mind body connection
  • The senses and being under or over sensitive to sensory input
  • Primitive reflexes and their impact on behaviour and learning
  • How issues your children have can be addressed from a sensory and reflex perspective
  • The rhythmic movements of infancy
  • Exercises and activities to help your child(ren)

iv/ What is Non-Violent Resistance (NVR)?

NVR is an empowering and non-physical method for parents and carers to manage and connect with young people to reduce and eradicate violence and abuse.

Often, caregivers try to control, to avoid being controlled and a downward spiral ensues. Many young people resist being controlled and the result is symmetrical escalation (carer and child both  losing their temper and trying to control each other) or complementary escalation (where the child becomes more and more coercive and powerful, and their parents or caregivers increasingly give in to their demands). This can lead to feelings of being helpless, hopeless, manipulated, powerless, inadequate, frustrated and desperate. The primary goal of NVR is the repair and rebuilding of relationships within the family.

This is an introduction to some of the principles of NVR which when put in place, will begin to help develop a more co-operative and harmonious relationship.

v/ Touching Stories:  The Healing Power of Massage and Metaphor

Storytelling has earned its place as the most important tradition humans possess. We associate with a story, imagination is roused and connections are made with ah ha moments in the land of possibility. Stories can deliver messages to the sub-conscious mind where there is no resistance.

Metaphor builds connections, allowing learning to take place and effecting change. If a picture paints 1000 words, metaphor paints 1000 pictures. We will cover:

  • Touch and its importance to emotional and physical wellbeing (with safer caring in mind)  including the role of oxytocin
  • How to be with a touch defensive child
  • Story massage and the power of metaphor
  • Embedding powerful messages into stories
  • Creating stories for your child

vi/ Teens and Technology

Knowing how to keep the rhythms and rules in place when you have a teenager retorting “You can’t make me!” is hard. They are so good at arguing how unfair you are being in comparison to “all their friends”. The webinar will show you how to:

  • have a stabilising and anchoring role for a teen
  • be vigilant in your care
  • manage technology as safely as possible
  • be supportive and not overly protective for your teen
