FAQ’s about our Non Violent Resistance Training: From Hostility to Harmony, Changing a Child's Challenging Behaviour

What age of child does the NVR parenting course, Hostility to Harmony work for?

Whilst NVR works with a child of any age including adult children, we recommend our e-course from Hostility to Harmony for Children from 3 -18.

Does the Non-Violent Resistance programme work with Children with autism and adhd

Challenging behaviour can be common in children with autism and adhd  and whilst it may be harder to put the principles into practice, Non Violent Resistance can be effective for these families. Many such children actually respond well to the Non Violent Resistance techniques because they are straight forward and simple to understand and follow. There are some simple things you can do with even the most strong willed child.

Will I Learn how to manage an aggressive child?

We do not seek to manage our children, instead over time we teach them to behave more appropriately and give a consistent message to our child that we cannot be bullied, hurt, manipulated, lied to etc.

What Behavioural issues will NVR address?

Non Violent resistance will address most challenging behaviours including: swearing, physically violent children, teenage aggression, a defiant child,  angry teenager, lying, stealing, controlling and manipulative behaviour,

My child won't engage in any therapy or discussions about needing to change

Believe it or not, they don't need to! The approach works by changing how we approach their behaviour and not engaging with it. For example, by repeatedly not reacting to their provocation, we can take the wind out of their sails.

Is it really possible to learn how to change my child's challenging behaviour via an e-course?

In one word yes! Gill is an experienced trainer and presenter who explains the principles of Non-Violent Resistance clearly. She breaks up the principles into twelve units which if followed diligently over twelve weeks, will make significant change. You may well start to see change within the first few weeks. The support gained from joining a group of similar parents is huge.

There are lots of parenting Courses out There. Why choose Stressed Parent?

Gill our founder and trainer on the e-course, has lived experience of CAPVA - Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Aggression. She has been  successfully working in the field of adoption support with families who have experienced extreme trauma since 2014. Read more about Gill's journey from Stressed Parent to Parent Mentor

How long will the Hostility to Harmony training take?

Less than one hour a week over twelve weeks to go through the e-course. Then  each week, you need to put it into effect. We hope it becomes your preferred parenting style which will stay with you until your child leaves home. It works with adult children too!

Is there any research to prove the effectiveness of the programme?

Yes! NVR is an evidence based approach with research including:

I’m not sure I have time for this and might never get round to studying

The course is provided in small bite size chunks and most of the videos are about 20 minutes long. You’re welcome to go at ANY pace you want! You will have access for 18 months. What is great is that you can watch the videos over and over, listen to them in the car, while you doing the house work, going for a walk. In fact we encourage it.

Will I have help if I get stuck?

We’re here to help. If all you need is an encouraging word, then give us a call.  You can always request an hour with Gill but we will of course charge you for her time. An hour may be all you need to get unstuck!

Another way to ensure that you don’t get stuck is to join a group of other parents. The support you get from other parents who are in the same boat is immense and the peer pressure of keeping up with the e-course to discuss applying the principles to your situation at the fortnightly Zoom sessions works wonders!

Can my partner watch the e-course and join the group

Absolutely, we would want that to happen as consistency is key. However to join the group you are signed up for,  you need to login in together via one login and sit side by side.

I can’t afford to pay in one go, are there payment options

Yes of course. We have payment options for e-course with a group and one to one mentoring. Check out this page here to see what the instalment payment options are NB scroll to bottom of page

I’m not sure it’s for me

We have a money back guarantee, so if you start the course and feel it’s not for you, just send an email to us within two weeks of purchasing the course and we will return your money in full, no questions asked!

I'm worried I will find myself back at square one after a period of time

That is a common worry and yes of course things can go backwards. However the tools and principles are so effective, that if you get yourself back on track with them, you will get your child back on track. That is why we provide you with 18 months access and a downloadable workbook and booklet to keep the programme fresh in your mind. After a while, they will become automatic.

Nothing else has worked, why is this so different?

Good question! Firstly Gill our founder has walked in your shoes and lived similar experiences.  As an adopter and  family therapist she has focused up to now on working with adopted families and is sent cases where other therapies has failed. Here is a testimonial from a social worker: This is the most calm and positive I have seen the family for many years, and it was so lovely to hear the positive feedback of your work with them. S and T both said this was the most helpful intervention they have had for the last 7 years and has made such a difference for them. CB Social Worker
